First, the bugs. Ubisoft games are known for being glitchy at launch, but there hasn’t been anything so “hilarious” as Assassin Creed Unity’s invisible-faced monsters, so it hasn’t been as widely reported. But these bugs are even worse, as they directly impact players’ ability to play the game.
There’s the backpack bug, where a glitch involving an overstuffed pack has locked many players out of their account for ages. Then recently there’s the biggest bug yet, where many Xbox One players logged in to find their characters erased. Though Ubisoft has promised to bring them back, there’s still no ETA on that, nor can these players play on alts, as their entire account progress will be rolled back when the fix comes.
While those are the two major ones, there are so, so many others as well, almost all of which I’ve experienced personally. Players can fall through the floor during missions and be unable to complete them. Many story missions will fail to start at all, leaving solo or grouped players standing around a locked door. The new Incursion is putting some players in an infinite loading loop when they try to play the mission, and many haven’t been able to play it at all as a result. And though it may not be a specific bug, players are heavily abusing the “kick” system, booting players from harder missions to allow friends to join at a late stage, or just for the hell of it.
"People often ask me why I even play a game I’m so critical of, and the reason is because at The Division’s core, there really is a great game there, and I want to see it live up to its promise. But I now feel like I have to set it aside until Massive figures out a way to fix the entire game, as playing it in its current form when it’s riddled with so many gamebreaking bugs and exploits is nothing but a recipe for frustration. This is supposed to be Ubisoft’s flagship IP going forward, and it needs better QA testing than what it’s gotten. Start a public test server, disable glitched skills, do whatever you have to in order to get this situation under control. I’ve reached out to Massive to try and understand exactly what they’re doing about all this, but haven’t heard back yet. The Division has so much potential that it would be a shame to see it sink due to technical problems alone, but right now, that’s exactly what we’re seeing unfold."
The single most-gamebreaking issue right now is a somewhat complicated, but repeatable exploit that has players glitching into the Challenging version of the Incursion using a well-known Mobile Cover glitch, then killing the boss using stacked skill power alone, and swapping players in and out to make it starting raining max level 240 gear. The whole process takes about 20 minutes, once you understand it, and getting that much gear was supposed to take players weeks. Now it might just take hours.
This might be the worst exploit yet, but it wasn’t the first. For weeks, players have been glitching certain missions to skip straight to bosses for easy farming. They’ve glitched outside the playable area of the Dark Zone, and farmed each other for XP unable to be touched. And before that, players figured out an infinite boss-killing loop for certain enemies in the wild that allowed players with free time to amass a huge amount of gear and materials. So far, that’s the only one I think has been completely fixed. But most of these other exploits are intact, including the Incursion one, and it’s destroying the very fabric of the game.
These exploits matter, because when you suddenly create this tier of “exploit players” who are 200-240 gear score, the “normal players” at 160-180 don’t have a chance. They will be absolutely slaughtered in places like the Dark Zone, to the point where there’s no reason to even play the mode anymore. They will be kicked out of groups for having “too low of gearscore” because they didn’t exploit. It also devalues the accomplishments of 200+ level players who achieved that kind of gear score legitimately. Soon, you won’t be able to tell who (if anyone) achieved a certain gearscore for real, or if they simply exploited.
